Live Wallpapers vs Static — What Works on iPhone and Android

A live wallpaper is a short looping video, not a JPEG. It can make a lock screen feel finished — drifting sparkle, a slow ribbon, a soft light shift — or it can drain battery and hide your clock. This page is when we publish a design as live, and how to set it so the OS treats it as a loop instead of a still frame.

What “live” means on this site

In the Pink Wallpapers catalog, live items are marked with a live / video badge and play in the preview. They are typically a few seconds, encoded as a small video, designed to loop without a visible cut. They are not iOS Live Photos (which are a still + a short motion clip triggered by press). That distinction matters: if you save our video and “set as wallpaper” through Photos the way you would a still, iPhone often stores one frame and the motion never runs.

When a live wallpaper is worth it

• The motion is slow and stays out of the clock area.
• You want the lock screen to feel animated and you do not mind a little extra battery use.
• The still frame of the loop still looks like a finished wallpaper if motion is off (Always-On Display, Low Power Mode).

We reject live uploads that flicker, flash, or put the motion behind where the clock sits. If the still frame is ugly, the live version is not publishable either — Low Power Mode and many Android always-on displays will show that frame for hours.

When you should use a static wallpaper instead

Busy home screens (lots of widgets, photo tiles, notification stacks) already move. A live wallpaper underneath adds noise. Minimal, Luxury, and Clean Girl stills are usually the better home-screen choice. Live works best as a lock screen, with a still from the same palette on the home screen. Battery: continuous video on the lock screen costs more than a JPEG. If you are already watching battery, pick static.

iPhone: set the loop properly

Do not set the downloaded video from Files as a regular wallpaper and expect it to move. iOS wallpaper motion is picky about format. The path that works with our catalog is the Pink Wallpapers iOS app, which installs the loop in the format the wallpaper picker accepts. After it is set, check Lock Screen preview with the phone at rest — if you only see a freeze-frame, the OS did not take the video.

Low Power Mode and some Focus modes reduce or stop wallpaper motion. That is an OS setting, not a broken file.

Android: use a live-wallpaper picker

Gallery → “Set as wallpaper” on a video file often extracts one frame. Use the system live-wallpaper picker, or a launcher that supports video wallpapers, and point it at the downloaded file. Cropping is more limited than with stills; if the loop is portrait, leave extra zoom off. Manufacturer skins (Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo) all have their own live-wallpaper panels — if you cannot find one, a still from the same collection is the reliable fallback.

Find live designs in the catalog

Open Live Wallpapers or the Live row on the homepage. Each live item still has a written description (palette, devices, upload date) like a still wallpaper — we do not publish a video with no context. Personal-use terms are the same as the rest of the catalog; see Terms.
